Consists of personal and business correspondence of Leese and his partner Thomas Oliver Larkin regarding their ownership of the U.S.S. Eveline; Leese's personal and legal correspondence, including his naturalization papers; indentures for three Chinese workers; and documents pertaining to Leese's role in Monterey as City Treasurer and stockholder in the Monterey Wharf Company. Correspondents include: Faxon Dean Atherton; W.F. Conrad; John Cooper; Joseph B. Eaton; Rafael Garcia; Jesus Moreno, and Henry Mellus. Items of note include a signed account statement of John C. Fremont for the U.S. Army, ca. 1847, and an account of gold dust sales in 1849. Also contains correspondence and legal documents regarding Leese v. U.S. Government, a land claim for Punto de Pinos in Monterey County, Calif.; a deed for Rancho Sausal from Mariano G. Vallejo to his sister, Rosalia, and her heirs; and three manuscript maps: Rancho Satoyme [Sotoyome], 20 Sept. 1844 by Jasper O'Farrell; Battery Street between Broadway and Green [San Francisco], 12 July 185[0] by William M. Eddy; and lots in Monterey, prior to 1848, drawn by Lt. Davis, Oct. 1849.
